The Vascular Surgical Society of Great Britain and Ireland (VSSGBI) was established in 1966.

In 2004, the Society changed its name to The Vascular Society to reflect its inclusive nature in representing vascular surgeons, radiologists, angiologists and others involved in independent vascular practice. The Society also became an incorporated company limited by guarantee (company number 5060866), and a registered charity (no 1102769).

The Circulation Foundation has been set up as the Society’s fundraising arm which undertakes all fundraising activities to support research projects and grants.

The Vascular Society currently has over 700 Members.

The objectives of the Society are to relieve sickness and to preserve and protect health by advancing the science and art of vascular surgery. These objectives are achieved through a number of means, which include:

  • Advising on the provision of vascular services
  • Advising on the education and training of vascular surgeons
  • Promoting clinical audit and governance, including the National Vascular Database of index operations by vascular Surgeons
  • Promoting and disseminating the results of research into vascular disorders
  • Providing continuing medical education through regular meetings and conferences including a multidisciplinary Annual Scientific Meeting
  • Providing information and advice for patients

The Society is a registered Charity (number 1102769).
